This is Padma Shri Dr. Leela Phatak, the famous gynecologist of Gwalior. Her father was the surgeon of Gwalior State during the rule of Scindias. She was the founder of Gajra Raja Medical College and Gynecologist of the Late Vijaya Raje Scindia, at the time of the birth of the Late Madhavrao Scindia in Mumbai.

She has written a book A Dream Come True that covers the story of the G.R. Medical college.

She converted all her wealth into a charitable trust in the name of her father Late Dr. Vinayak Hari Phatak who was the surgeon of Gwalior State during the rule of Scindia.

Dr. Leela Phatak was a Padmashree Awardee and India’s first commissioner of Family Welfare in Government of India.

She resided at Koteshwar Road and even now though the bunglow has a name Shamadaan, it’s still known as Dr. Leela Phatak.
