Shrimant Maharaja Daulat Rao Sindhia (Shinde) of Gwalior State (1779 – 21 March 1827) discussing battle of Laswaree on 1st November 1803 in the Second Maratha War. In spite of his defeats at Aligarh and Delhi and the loss of much of the Agra garrison, Scindia Rao still deployed an army of 9,000 infantry, 5,000 horsemen and a substantial artillery in Hindoostan (the North of India around Delhi). On 30th December 1803 Scindia signed a treaty with the East India Company bringing the war to an end.

Daulat Rao reign coincided with struggles for supremacy within the Maratha Confederacy, and with Maratha resistance to the consolidation of British hegemony over northern and central India in the early 19th century.
